Many foreign volunteers worked to eradicate smallpox from the Indian Smallpox Eradication Program. Although rarely acknowledged, women also played a role in its eradication. Two American women doctors Dr Mary Guinan and Dr Cornelia E Davis had to prove themselves in the hyper-masculine of international public health. Their memoirs chronicle the difficulties that sexism played both at home and abroad.
